Untreated or Relapsed Clubfoot​

An untreated child will learn to walk using the top part or sides of their foot/feet. They will likely be in pain. They may develop blisters, bruises and calluses as the soft parts of the foot toughen from abnormal weight bearing.

As they grow older, the foot deformity becomes fixed, and this leads to a permanent disability which is more expensive to treat as it will require major surgery and extensive rehabilitation. The family may also have to find customized shoes that can accommodate the new shape of the foot. As children grow older, they become heavier, and may have no one willing or able to carry them to school, especially if the school is far. They may grow up and remain dependent on the family because their chance of getting an education and a job due to disability.

Previously, it was thought that the Ponseti Method was only effective in children below 5 years of age. However, results from within Zimbabwe have proven otherwise. What is a relapse?

During the bracing phase, your child may have a relapse. It is the reappearance of any component of the clubfoot deformity, which will require treatment. Relapses are usually caused by not wearing the brace at all or not wearing it correctly.

 

Common mistakes that cause relapses

· Changing the position of the shoes

· Bending or straightening the metal bar

· Not using the brace for the full amount of time prescribed.

· Taking off the brace when your child is fussy—this just teaches your child that if they cry, you will take it off.

· Not putting the heel all the way down

· Not returning to the clinic for appointments

   

What should I do when this happens?

Go to the clinic for assistance. They will asses your child and start them on a treatment plan.
